The Teacher's Unions don't like the program because it allows children to avoid schools that are incapable of providing them with a solid education. If students are allowed to pick an choose their schools then underperforming schools will rightly be easy to identify thus endangering the jobs of unionized teachers.
Liberal-progressive-socialists in the Obama Administration, of which the president is one, care more about what the union says than what is good for the children. After all, the children that are affected are not part of the ruling elite so they don't matter.
