We usually think of "heroes" as those who have been awarded a medal for heroic action in battle or who took action in the face of extreme danger by running into a burning building to save someone else.
I would like to say that this man is a hero. He didn't have to volunteer to serve. He was "too old." But he is proudly serving his country despite his age.
