When I was stationed overseas my family always wondered why I left for work each morning at a different time and why I'd talk about the different routes to and from work that I would use. I tried to explain the common sense behind never establishing a set pattern in your daily comings and goings because you always had to remember that you could be a target of either criminal revenge or terrorism. They accepted, however, that I always took a seat with my back to the wall where I could see people entering the restaurant. It was awkward at times but even now that I'm retired I can't comfortably sit with my back to a door or window.

I'm sure that the investigation will uncover the reasons for this seemingly senseless ambush; but as for now there is not enough information for us to draw conclusions as to whether this was a purely criminal act or an act of terrorism. We do know that four brave officers are dead and that is enough to soberly remind us that those who put on the badge truly do put their lives on the line.

May God rest their souls. They shall not be forgotten.
